On March 17 in 1973, the Pulitzer Prize winning photo, Burst of Joy, was taken by photographer Sal Veder.
Burst of Joy depicts POW Lieutenant Colonel Robert Stirm returning home to his family in the United States after being held captive for more than five years in North Vietnam.
Although his daughters are ran to greet him with lovingly outstretched arms, the reunion was a bittersweet one. On the same day that Stirm was released from captivity, just three days before this photo was taken, he received a breakup letter from his wife, Loretta.

The holiday that most people seem to love to hate is approaching. It kind of seems wrong to even call it a holiday. I think that Valentine’s Day exists to feed capitalism in the post-Christmas spending slump and to allow men to swoon women into their arms (women kind of have the tendency to let their guard down around this day, I think. Who wants to be alone on Valentine’s Day?!).
Well, whatever you do on Valentine’s Day, I’m sure you’ve at some point in your life had a tough time picking out a gift for that special someone in your life.
I don’t think that I have a tough time picking gifts for Rusty, I just have a hard time keeping them a surprise. As you can probably guess, he already knows about the Knicks tickets.
So how about your dude?
Get him sports tickets to share (with you or his pals) for one of his favorite sports teams. You can usually find good 2-for or 4-for deals on StubHub or eBay.
Get him a Groupon for a local restaurant or bar; that way he will be forced to take you out somewhere!
A beautifully framed photo of the two of you always makes a vain gift that you can both enjoy. It’s an affordable and thoughtful gift as well!
Cook him his favorite meal! How about packing him something special for his lunch, and leaving a little kiss inside?
Other gift suggestions?
If your guy is into Dan Brown type novels, I recommend getting him the Stieg Larsson trilogy. You can get the books for relatively cheap on Amazon or eBay.
Is he a strap-hanging commuter? Then he needs a commuter bag, right? Timbuk2 bags are customizable, practical and don’t run the risk of looking too feminine (so you know that he’ll use it). They also have e-reader holders and laptop sleeves.
Can you afford to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city for a couple of days, but want to stay in the general vicinity? The New York Times has a good list of Northeastern hot spots. Just a few honorable mentions: The Hamptons, Hudson Valley, Atlantic City and Philly.
Whatever you decide to get your honey or friend or mother for Valentine’s Day, just make it something special…and they’ll be sure to <3 you back!

Doubt truth to be a liar
but never doubt thy love. [Hamlet, Shakespeare]
