On March 17 in 1973, the Pulitzer Prize winning photo, Burst of Joy, was taken by photographer Sal Veder.Burst of Joy depicts POW Lieutenant Colonel Robert Stirm returning home to his family in the United States after being held captive for more than five years in North Vietnam.Although his daughters are ran to greet him with lovingly outstretched arms, the reunion was a bittersweet one. On the same day that Stirm was released from captivity, just three days before this photo was taken, he received a breakup letter from his wife, Loretta.

February is Black History Month.Quite honestly, I do not take a lot of time out of my life to think about my heritage. However, this month, I just happen to be working on several projects at my job that I will allow me to explore the history of my African-American culture a little bit more, and perhaps share it with others. While brainstorming with other Empire educators and staff, we came up with the idea of hosting a contest for the students:On the 24th of this month, they will hair dress and style the make-up of their mannequins or models to best represent their favorite African-American (pop, history, music, etc.) icon. To inspire the students, I am thinking of posting a few Black History month facts around the school every few days, just to keep the contest and some ideas fresh in their minds.I’ll be sure to post some of the interesting facts that I find on here, along with pictures of the contest. Aren’t you excited to see what they come up with?!Until then, celebrate and cherish your roots! Happy Black History Month!Benovic Bradley

On this day in history, the third Monday of every January, we celebrate the achievements and ambitions of Martin Luther King, Junior. We thank him for championing equality, desegregation and the importance of non-violence in the face of oppression.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
